What Is Tennis Elbow?

Athletes are not the only ones to experience elbow and shoulder problems. Many of the repetitive motions used in everyday activities can result in tennis elbow, also called lateral epicondylitis, an inflammation of the tendons that makes every move extremely painful.

What Causes Tennis Elbow?

Hours spent typing on a computer keyboard or moving around a mouse can be as damaging as the repetitive swinging of a tennis racquet. Any profession that requires repeated hand motions, including dentistry, carpentry and house painting, can cause tennis elbow. The shoulder is also susceptible to injury from wear and tear. Aging alone can lead to shoulder arthritis, a painful inflammation of the joints, and even rotator-cuff tears. When caused by aging, rotator-cuff tears are often painless and do not require treatment.

But injury to the elbow and shoulder do not always stem from overuse and getting older. Traumatic injury that is caused by a fall, car accident, heavy lifting and the like occurs frequently, and can result in a separated or dislocated shoulder, or a fractured elbow.

What Are The Symptoms Of Tennis Elbow?

Pain, swelling and bruising, and limited movement are all symptoms of traumatic injuries, which should always be evaluated by a medical professional as quickly as possible.

Patient Testimonials:

"Dr. Chalkin is a rare and special physician in that he is the best I've ever seen at what he does AND he is humane, caring, responsive and genuinely concerned about his patients as individuals. He approaches his work more like a "mission" than a job with individualized care, spends time ensuring your questions are answered and is simply one of the smartest clinicians I know. He has operated on me several times and was the only surgeon to be able to accurately diagnose a complicated ortho issue and treated me to where I am fully functional and active today."
